[personal profile] tozka has posted some recs for non-AI instrumental music to work to.

Meanwhile, at [community profile] polyamships:

27 April: How did you discover poly ships? What makes you write/read/draw them?

Honestly? No idea. Maybe it was Design for Living's fault?

Considering the types of ships I, erhm, ship, it's probably the impulse of "Why must X choose? X has two hands!".

29 April: Self rec time! what poly fanwork of yours are you most proud of? share it here! Not a creator? Then who's your favorite fandom creator? Time to share!!!

I guess Triangle? (Didier/Juliette/The Marquis)

01 May: Rec post for fics
This is a post to recommend poly fics exclusively. You may comment or edit your comment as many times as you want, but please, only recommend fics on this post. All ratings, warnings, and ships welcome.

I have to rec riverwalk by youknowthelines (Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot) :D

Life decided some (internet) things were not meant to be (ficathons becoming drabblethons), but it could be worse IRL.

In honour of [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth, [community profile] polyamships is doing a little event.

25 April: What is/are your current favorite poly ship/s? Want to share a little bit about them with us?

At the moment, I'm spinning

  • Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot (The Adventures of Sir Lancelot)
It's honestly amazing a show for children from the 50s manages to handle the Guinevere/Lancelot side of things in a thoughtful manner, while also not going all the way with it because... they both love their King so much. Basically, Guinevere and Arthur have two hands and they can use them, godammit!

  • Didier/Juliette/The Marquis (Ich und die Kaiserin)
Niche af. I like to think, now that Didier has ascended to conductor (and possibly can show off his own compositions), he can get an assistant, and therefore more time! And he can join Juliette and her dummy Marquis on it.

  • Buffo/Erik/Julie/Mark (The Last Performance)
    So.
Erik loves Julie, who loves Mark. But Buffo loves Julie (and Erik, apparently, albeit in a more love-hate way). Erik has one of those hate relationships with Buffo (that we can fix ;) ) and is way to handsy with Mark. Got it?
Very messy, very angsty, and everything could be fixed if they all kissed.

  • George/Gilda/Tom (Design for Living)
Rewatched recently and I'm back to spinning them in my brain. Notable for being a movie (originally a play, the London version had Anton Walbrook!) from the 1930s that has the girl getting both boys. The chemistry is just off the charts.

  • Felicitas/Leo/Ulrich (Flesh and the Devil)
Another movie in which its central relationships could be fixed if they all kissed. Felicitas has two hands and Leo and Ulrich should just kiss already.

(Shoutouts to Rick/Ilsa/Victor of Casablanca fame and C.K. Dexter Haven/Mike/Elizabeth/Tracy of The Philadelphia Story fame!)

(Shall always call C.K Dezter Haven as C.K. Dexter Haven because that's how it should be >:3 )

Was thinking that, for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth, I should host ficathons over at my communities. All three of them. Oop.

Under the cut, there's some art.

And now for some interesting links:

Scripts from the Crypt #19: Der Januskopf (1920), Apparently a full script of Der Januskopf was found, but whoever found it has been sitting on it for months. Hoping they actually get to release it to us peasants. I shall refrain from complaining about these guys' "amazing" opinions.

How missing episodes from ‘The Daleks' Master Plan’ were found, an interview with Sue Malden, former BBC archivist.

TCM's Classic Film Festival (2026) will premiere a new restoration of Letty Lynton, the "forbidden illegal", as the hotvintagemod on Tumblr put it, Joan Crawford movie. At this point, I should just embrace I quite like her work. Johnny Guitar was the last one I saw and it was mesmerising.

Ivor Novello: A Story of the London Fog, a very short article, but Michael Williams wrote an entire book about Novello, his movies and his persona (plus him being a gay icon, which at the time was largely ignored, and without a doubt some today still make an effort to straightwash him). Good little intro and a taster.

In other news, I'm becoming obsessed with The Rat trilogy. Why do I think it's slowly becoming a commentary on Novello's fame and how the critics, erhm, critisised him for being too pretty (and not of the marrying kind)?

[personal profile] vriddy's account on her experiences on tiny fandoms is an interesting read.

About The Man Without Desire (1923): This film has it all! Rococo, death, suspended animation via magic, people being the clones of their ancestors, a man being a fish out of water for five in-world minutes, erectile disfunction. Yet! It never goes all the way (and I'm bummed about it).

I would say this was a weird metaphor for comphet while being gay, but Novello was never really in the closet. And I'm talking about Novello less because he starred in the movie and mote because he was one of the producers.

(I would have said this was a metaphor for asexuality, but Vittorio, the man without desire himself, dies at the end. ED, comphet or asexuality, any lens you look at this movie through, is yikes.)

[community profile] bethefirst has been revealed! The masterlist is here. 30 works is no joke.

Today's Friday Five answers behind the cut. Warning: very repetitive and pessimist.

[personal profile] maevedarcy has a huge list of questions to ask a fangirl. I am no girl, but the questions appear interesting.

How did you first discover your main fandoms?
I may have told this story before. I was aware of Doctor Who, having watching bits and bobs of some episodes, but didn't really know what I was watching. While searching for Van Gogh documentaries on YouTube, a clip from Vincent and the Doctor sneaked in. That was the first time I had a name for the weird (affectionate) show. The rest is history.
As for Conrad Veidt, again, I was semi-aware after deciding that The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was a nice entryway to feature-length silent films. But it took years to learn more about him and get bonked on the head with the urge of "I must watch everything".

What was it about the fandom(s) that initially captured your interest?
Doctor Who: Time travel! Space! Aliens! Love and compassion!
Conrad Veidt: This man can do it all! He seems nice. He's making me feel things.

Can you recall a moment when you realized you were more than just a casual fan?
When you start non-stop drawing fanart, basically.

How has your interest in fandom evolved over time?
Doctor Whogrew until it stabilised, a few years ago. But it's still here, and will always be here.

Is there anyone in your life that shares your passion for fandom?
Nope.

How does your fandom inspire you in your everyday life?
More so my everyday life inspired my fandoms, if you think about it.

Does the fandom influence your personal style, hobbies, or interests?
The other way around.

Can you share a personal story related to your fandom that you cherish?
When I first joined Dreamwidth, I followed my favourite author, even if she hadn't updated in years. She sent me a message. I was chuffed to bits, even if it was a "hey I don't post here anymore, but thanks".

What valuable lessons have you learned from being part of fandom?
You can be as nice as you want, but that doesn't mean others will be in return. Don't bother with them.

Have you met any of your closest friends through a fandom?
Nope.

Are there any rituals or traditions you enjoy before new releases related to fandom?
No. I have yet to see the newest DW seasons. And the "new" releases of Connie material are not for us mere mortals.

If you could introduce someone new to fandom, how would you describe it to them.
Easy. There are a few newbies guides to DW, and Connie is just some guy.

Fearless Frank on Youtube. William Russell is in it. It's age-restricted though ugh.

We got a free very fancy coffee machine.

I'm halfway through Judex, found a very HD copy. Musidora will never not be famous to me.

There's a fictional biography on Murnau called Nosferatu (of course) and Veidt is a character who describes his sexuality as "musical" and reads palms. Incredible.

Speaking of Herr Veidt, they fucked up his house in London (it's 69 Platts Lane if you want to see how it looks now).

[profile] classicfimex has one pinch hit. Also, they accept art treats! Hmmm...
scifirenegade: (Default)
Had to. There's one thing here that's been rattling in brain.

A - Your current OTP
Barbara/Ian forever. Barbarian, if you will.

B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind
My first thought was Ahmad/Jaffar of The Thief of Bagdad fame (all because of a fanvid), but I'm not in that fandom.

C - A pairing you have never liked and probably never will
Will not answer. Not because I'm afraid of being crucified, I just don't want to rain on people's parades.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t
Read number C.

E - Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
It's all drops in the ocean, but yes. What? Pretty much everything I've ever drawn and written :P

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
Doctor Who. (Would say Pókemon, but I don't do much besides looking at fanart.)

G - Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it?
No idea. Belle/Beast? Willy Fogg/Romy? Robin Hood/Maid Marion? Who knows?

H - Do you prefer characters from real action series or anime series?
While I like anime, I'm more of a live-action person. But this is comparing apples and oranges.

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
Not exactly Tumblr, and I didn't stop liking it, just became more shut off from it.
And people say I lack social skills...

J - Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over Tumblr
I guess Caligari? I never expected a silent film to have such a fandom. It makes sense here, there's so many loose ends and vagueness you can pick at and discuss, it's a beautiful-looking film, so lots of art the somnambulist is hot.

K - How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom?
I have curated my DW fandom experience so well over the years I like it here. Granted, it's mostly classic Who.
The Conrad Veidt fandom has great artists. Yeah.

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for?
The next part of the series?

M - Your favorite fanart or fanartist?
I can't choose just one.
Connie Veidt as Leyendecker socks man be upon thee

N - Your favorite fanfiction or fanauthor?
I love thisiszircon's Undercurrents.

O - Choose a song at random, which OTP does it remind you of
My one weakness!
Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
Sir meme, I have been haunted by the three sentence fic/drabble fusion of Ich und die Kaiserin and The Phantom of the Opera (1925 film edition). No need for more inventions.
Wait. Since Captain Hardt is in Anno Dracula (and a vampire), The Spy in Black AU but Hardt is a vampire and survives. \o/

Q - A ship you’ve abandoned and why
Never. They stick together till the ends of time.

R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships
All the rarepairs from the teeny tiny fandoms ('cept Kurt/Paul Anders als die Andern, Droste/Ellissen of FP1 and Lancelot/Lynette of anything Arthurian.)
Or Erik/Me.

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon
Erik dyes his hair white. Or his valet does. All for the aesthetic.

T - If you mostly have homoships, do you have any heteroships?
This! This was what's bugging me because I've never heard the terms "homoship" and "hereroship". Are they recent terms? Or are they older but more obscure?
I dunno.

U - If you mostly have heteroships, do you have any homoships?
Read T.

V - Are you one of those fans who can’t watch anything without shipping?
Don't think so.

W - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
Did this here

X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms
Doctor Who - Barbara/Ian <3
Anders als die Andern - Kurt/Paul (obviously)
The Spy in Black - Hardt/Bütter

Y - A fandom you’re in but have no ships from
Caligari, probably.
Wait no, those three dudes. They're basically canon, that doesn't count.

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go
Connie's films should be more readily available. By this time last year, we got one previously unavailable film. Where's Hektor Dalmore? Christian Wahnschaffe? (What other unavailable films have people's names as the title?)
At least there's still

scifirenegade: Comic panel with a cartoony seventh Doctor saying Good grief! (good grief | seven)
Everyday I cry for the deactivation of hanswalterconradveidt on Tumblr (they're also on the Internet Archive?). So much good stuff, so much research, lost. These are the true angels that carry this godforsaken fandom, the kind souls who are enthusiastic and want to share the enthusiasm, alongside the artists.

Anyway, I shared a Karloff fanart, now I share this beautiful The Man Who Laughs piece. The author has a tumblr, but couldn't find the art there, only on AO3.

And The Spy in Black piece, so soft, like bütter. (That's my bestie Veidt fan acquaintance!)

PS: Connie as Carlos petting a borzoi in Carlos und Elisabeth.

You're welcome.
scifirenegade: Conrad Veidt behind the scenes of King of the Damned, making a wonderful uffing face. Words cannot describe it. (meh | connie kotd)
Welp, there's a new Megamind film?? Oh, it was streaming-only, and it sucks arse. The Disney direct-to-DVD sequels have evolved (Cinderella 3 is awesome. Much better than the original :P )

This interesting post on Tumblr about the differences and similarities between The Adventures of Robin Hood and Casablanca.

Speaking of Robin Hood, it came up on the TV. Had a grand old time.

I'm on Squidgeworld now! Had a lurker account for a while and decided, oh what the hell. It's pretty barren as of now, I'm slowly uploading my stuff :D
