Been a very bad, bad boy when it comes to checking out Dreamwidth. Sorry... To compensate, here's some random stuff.

Recently watched Louis J. Gasnier and George Cukor's The Virtuous Sin, which is a pretty serviceable romdramedy (romantic comedy-drama, which is a subject matter that should not work, yet somehow kinda does). Victor's actor is destroying the ever-loving-fuck out of the scenery with his mashers, though. He's the worst part.

Anyway, the reason I watched it was, essentially, very shallow. Paramount had a German version made. And in the role of General Platoff, we have Conrad Veidt. And I want it so bad.

I want to see him go from "Ironface" (Eisengesicht?)

To whatever this is

I want to see him hold a coat to the air and throw documents at people and play with and throw around a riding crop (yes, I know Kaiserin exists but you know he would do it completely different here). I want to hear him say those lines! I want to see him on the seesaw! The seesaw! And that uniform...

E. from Villain by Accident posted the first part of their analysis of Veidt's second stay in Hollywood, mostly about Escape.

I'm having trouble with stumfilm.dk at the moment, but they recently published an article about new soundtracks for silent films made by music students!

Movies 'n' stuff: FilmotecaUNAM's playlist of silent films, Cinematheque's HENRI platform (watched Musidora's Vicenta on there), Elonet for Finnish films, MOSFilm for that Soviet stuff. The EYE is supreme.

So, Blood and Tea and Red String (2006), the love child of one person, made over the course of over 10 years, is my new favourite thing. If you want to make a dark fairy tale, embrace the fact it's still a fairy tale, which this movie certainly did.

Basically, the aristocratic Mice ask the Oak Creatures to make them the doll of their desires. They do, but they live the doll so much they offer the Mice's money back to keep it. The Mice steal it.

Reality and fiction mix. I feel like there's something about women being treated as objects (and then there's the spider woman). Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe it's just a surreal piece of art.

(Also, the water is made of, I think, that very transparent film one can use to wrap food or whatever. Lovely!)

AO3 has been down for almost 20 hours. I would suspect a DDoS attack, but when the 2023 one happened, they were pretty open about it. Who knows.

It's been done! [community profile] conradveidt community is up and running! There a Movie Tournament Poll happening, and the film that wins will be highlighted for a whole month!

And under the cut, Lancelot stained glass, but made with coloured pencils.

Having a panic attack while your friend is also having a very shitty time and having to help (while trying to not seem like you yourself are having a bad time) is sure an experience. Been trying to get over it with movies.

Zootopia's message is still a little muddy, but "Didney" would never do something like this now (Zootopia 2 not withstanding, no idea how good that one is). Goldeneye made me feel like a kid again. I always forget I enjoy James Bond movies. The difference is I'm an adult now, and can think of them critically.

As for new watches... 8½ is... overrated? I guess? It feels like a dream, it plays with its medium so darn well, but alas, I cared not for our director character. Maybe on a rewatch it's better, but I have no desire to do so. Sleeping Car though? Very very silly. Always nice seeing Madeleine Carroll in a not-drama. I have seen four talkies with Ivor Novello and in half of them he's the most obnoxious rascal (good, he plays them well). Lots of moving camera, not enough trains. I still enjoyed I Lived With You more, but somehow believed Carroll and Novello's romance more than Jeans and Novello.

(And I would believe his romance with me even more *cough*)

I have to thirst somewhere. My friends can't handle it, and it's not even as scandalous as Cairns's for Veidt's tight clothing :P
