Life decided some (internet) things were not meant to be (ficathons becoming drabblethons), but it could be worse IRL.

In honour of 3weeks4dreamwidth, polyamships is doing a little event.

25 April: What is/are your current favorite poly ship/s? Want to share a little bit about them with us?

At the moment, I'm spinning

Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot (The Adventures of Sir Lancelot)
It's honestly amazing a show for children from the 50s manages to handle the Guinevere/Lancelot side of things in a thoughtful manner, while also not going all the way with it because... they both love their King so much. Basically, Guinevere and Arthur have two hands and they can use them, godammit!

Didier/Juliette/The Marquis (Ich und die Kaiserin)
Niche af. I like to think, now that Didier has ascended to conductor (and possibly can show off his own compositions), he can get an assistant, and therefore more time! And he can join Juliette and her dummy Marquis on it.

Buffo/Erik/Julie/Mark (The Last Performance)
So.
Erik loves Julie, who loves Mark. But Buffo loves Julie (and Erik, apparently, albeit in a more love-hate way). Erik has one of those hate relationships with Buffo (that we can fix ;) ) and is way to handsy with Mark. Got it?
Very messy, very angsty, and everything could be fixed if they all kissed.

George/Gilda/Tom (Design for Living)
Rewatched recently and I'm back to spinning them in my brain. Notable for being a movie (originally a play, the London version had Anton Walbrook!) from the 1930s that has the girl getting both boys. The chemistry is just off the charts.

Felicitas/Leo/Ulrich (Flesh and the Devil)
Another movie in which its central relationships could be fixed if they all kissed. Felicitas has two hands and Leo and Ulrich should just kiss already.

(Shoutouts to Rick/Ilsa/Victor of Casablanca fame and C.K. Dexter Haven/Mike/Elizabeth/Tracy of The Philadelphia Story fame!)

(Shall always call C.K Dezter Haven as C.K. Dexter Haven because that's how it should be >:3 )

comments

Hoping they actually get to release it to us peasants. I shall refrain from complaining about these guys' "amazing" opinions.

How missing episodes from ‘The Daleks' Master Plan’ were found, an interview with Sue Malden, former BBC archivist.

TCM's Classic Film Festival (2026) will premiere a new restoration of Letty Lynton, the "forbidden illegal", as the hotvintagemod on Tumblr put it, Joan Crawford movie. At this point, I should just embrace I quite like her work. Johnny Guitar was the last one I saw and it was mesmerising.

Ivor Novello: A Story of the London Fog, a very short article, but Michael Williams wrote an entire book about Novello, his movies and his persona (plus him being a gay icon, which at the time was largely ignored, and without a doubt some today still make an effort to straightwash him). Good little intro and a taster.

In other news, I'm becoming obsessed with The Rat trilogy. Why do I think it's slowly becoming a commentary on Novello's fame and how the critics, erhm, critisised him for being too pretty (and not of the marrying kind)?

comments

Rococo, death, suspended animation via magic, people being the clones of their ancestors, a man being a fish out of water for five in-world minutes, erectile disfunction. Yet! It never goes all the way (and I'm bummed about it).

I would say this was a weird metaphor for comphet while being gay, but Novello was never really in the closet. And I'm talking about Novello less because he starred in the movie and mote because he was one of the producers.

(I would have said this was a metaphor for asexuality, but Vittorio, the man without desire himself, dies at the end. ED, comphet or asexuality, any lens you look at this movie through, is yikes.)

comments

Been a very bad, bad boy when it comes to checking out Dreamwidth. Sorry... To compensate, here's some random stuff.

Recently watched Louis J. Gasnier and George Cukor's The Virtuous Sin, which is a pretty serviceable romdramedy (romantic comedy-drama, which is a subject matter that should not work, yet somehow kinda does). Victor's actor is destroying the ever-loving-fuck out of the scenery with his mashers, though. He's the worst part.

Anyway, the reason I watched it was, essentially, very shallow. Paramount had a German version made. And in the role of General Platoff, we have Conrad Veidt.
So, Blood and Tea and Red String (2006), the love child of one person, made over the course of over 10 years, is my new favourite thing. If you want to make a dark fairy tale, embrace the fact it's still a fairy tale, which this movie certainly did.

Basically, the aristocratic Mice ask the Oak Creatures to make them the doll of their desires. They do, but they live the doll so much they offer the Mice's money back to keep it. The Mice steal it.

Reality and fiction mix. I feel like there's something about women being treated as objects (and then there's the spider woman). Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe it's just a surreal piece of art.

(Also, the water is made of, I think, that very transparent film one can use to wrap food or whatever. Lovely!)

comments

Having a panic attack while your friend is also having a very shitty time and having to help (while trying to not seem like you yourself are having a bad time) is sure an experience. Been trying to get over it with movies.

Zootopia's message is still a little muddy, but "Didney" would never do something like this now (Zootopia 2 not withstanding, no idea how good that one is). Goldeneye made me feel like a kid again. I always forget I enjoy James Bond movies. The difference is I'm an adult now, and can think of them critically.

As for new watches... 8½ is... overrated? I guess? It feels like a dream, it plays with its medium so darn well, but alas, I cared not for our director character. Maybe on a rewatch it's better, but I have no desire to do so. Sleeping Car though? Very very silly. Always nice seeing Madeleine Carroll in a not-drama. I have seen four talkies with Ivor Novello and in half of them he's the most obnoxious rascal (good, he plays them well). Lots of moving camera, not enough trains. I still enjoyed I Lived With You more, but somehow believed Carroll and Novello's romance more than Jeans and Novello.

<strike>(And I would believe his romance with me even more *cough*)</strike>

I have to thirst somewhere. My friends can't handle it, and it's not even as scandalous as Cairns's for Veidt's tight clothing :P

EDIT: Ah! It is, in my humble opinion, the most complete and properly sourced bio on Herr Veidt on the 'net (the Liebe macht blind link has a YouTube video with the live music when the movie was shown in Cine Recobrado; silent film tunes to jam to). Why yes, we are manifesting the movie's release, dammit!

Movies Silently has a review for The Girl in Tails (1926) and it seems right up my alley. Meanwhile, Classic Film and TV Corner has a review for Shooting Stars (1928), which also seems like my jam.

It's a shame to see the Internet Archive fully embrace artificial intelligence, but I've been following Brewster for a while, so it's not surprising. Techbros, istg...

Still making my way through Tih-Minh, Édouard Mathé showed up! Judex and Roger together again *sparkles* Still haven't found the will to rewatch Stromboli (English version, aka the best version).

comments

It's nothing, really, but I'm glad to say that, once again, I have all the available media related to her!

Watched Stromboli (1950). "We need more horrible women characters", they say, but they would not be able to handle Karin. There is a problem: TVCine (the channel I watched the movie on) aired a mutilated version that cuts 10-20 minutes from the original runtime! For shame! I was so excited about it (it's good btw). Also Ingrid Bergman very good and hair is gorgeous.
Except not really, because I need to write this somewhere and don't want to double post.

Once a Lady (1931). What a bore. Woman marries wet cardboard Tory who hates her. Has a child. Basically the whole family forces the woman away. Ivor Novello is there and he's absolutely wasted on this (but very charming, glad to finally hear him without a fake accent). There's a pic of him with Joan Crawford for what is worth. Can't escape that woman lately.

Alright, Tih Minh shenanigans under the cut.

comments

This is the second spam comment I get on AO3. Logged-in account. The bots are getting accounts! Both affected fics were from teeny-tiny fandoms (one was Denouement, which has been there for a year, so it's not like they're only targetting new fics).

It's also really funny they want me to "commission them". Most of my stuff IS art. If I want to "bring my stories to life" I can just go and do it without getting scammed :)

I'm lucky I haven't gotten the nasty ones who insult me or whatever.

comments

Caved in. Oops.

Can already tell it's gonna be one of Those (TM): exoticism and the racism edition.

I'll say it, the intros that go "Actor So-and-So is Character Such-and-Such" and then there's a little scene of the character are awesome.

The Grand Vampire actor is Count Merlin of The Charlatan! Not really.

No idea what Jacques (René Cresté) shtick is, but Placide is very Passepartout.

Of course, the Vietnamese woman is too primitive and needs good ol' western reeducation! Bah! "It was of its time" my arse, we never left the Dark Ages, our eyes have just grown accustomed to the darkness.

Placide and Rosette (his fiancé) are wild! Great match, they're ride or die for one another.

I know it's because they're both played by white actors (and asian women are often stereotyped into being demure and therefore "perfect wife material") but I'm impressed that Jacques and Tih Minh are an item.

The soundtrack is pretty good, even when it goes all musique concréte (think Delia Derbyshire). Usually it's out-of-place, but not here. Feuillade's serials are wild.

I wrote "Severe lack of Musidora" and yeah. Where are you, darling, we miss you.

The whole sequence of Rih Minh being kidnapped + the aftermath were very well shot.

Dolores (who works for the baddies, a doctor and an Indian guy, because of course 🙄) is a mind reader?? And can compell people to do whatever she wants?? I don't think she's into it tbh

I also wrote "René Cresté fine as hell". He isn't that much in the ep, and his character at the mo is a nothing-burger, but yes.

Pretty sure Venenos (Les Vampires) mucked aeound in this lab.

There was a guy in the beginning called Stone that was found with no memory and no ability to speak and the baddies were using him??

So Jacques is brooding, and it's all very reminiscent of Jud— what the hell ghostly figures on the beach?? Is this The Seventh Seal??

Blackmail! Another very well done sequence. That zoom on the date. The acting. And the photo is gone!

So, Jacques is one of those white guys who go places and take stuff. Granted, what he got was a copy of a book with a note that may be useful if Europe goes to war (WW1 reference), but still. The baddies crave it for their unknown nefarious deeds.

Placide, no! That's an historical artifact!

Placide, no! I know Kistna (the evil Indian guy) is evil, but no need to basically call him a slur!

So, they left Tih Minh at the gate like a stray kitten, and she's acting oddly, because the baddies gave her the <strike>blue rose</strike> potion of forgetfulness. So she can't even speak. Just like Stone!

Jacques, no! Don't yell at her!

It's less of a cliffhanger, and more of a gothic version of a Yevgeni Bauer movie.

So far, pretty standard Feuillade.

comments

The first newsletter I recieve from the Danish Film Institute is about Olaf Fønss and about how self-absorbed he was. Great.

Except it's more than that. It's about fan culture.

Here's the article if you want to take a look-see.

( Some observations )

EDIT: Silent Film festival in Copenhagen! Lots of good stuff!

Managed to track down another book from the Veidt shelves (speaking of that nice pic of him posing by his bookshelf as if he's deciding on what he should read).

It's Gábor Vaszary's Monpti. Which is the age-old tale of boy meets girl, girl says she's rich while she's actually poor, boy dumps girl, girl gets hit by a car and dies, boy is sad.

This man has this and Silone's Bread and Wine on his shelves. The duality.

And speaking of Connie, you can now watch Die Große Sehnsucht (1930) on the Digitaler Lesesaal. Thank you, Bundesarchiv! Since Herr Veidt plays himself in this, it's a great showing of his persona at the time (read that I wrote persona and not person).

The ever-elusive Uncle Walt short by Robert Swarthe has been found. It's not good, as many elusive and mystical pieces of ~ lost media ~ are.

comments

Not Untamed, But Childish

Joan Crawford’s all-talkie debut, Untamed, begins as a drama with music set in South America, then makes a choppy transition to a society romance in which the lovers are reconciled only after she attempts to murder him. The film’s tone shifts with every new scene. At no time does any character in Untamed resemble any human being who ever lived, but its flamboyant unreality gives the film a vaguely comic, unintentional charm.

-Scott Eyman, The Speed of Sound

So I watched it for the madness.

It was something alright.

It is all over place, with a dash of South American exoticism. They're acting as if South America (as a monolith) is the anals of hell, dear lord.

Anyway, wow this lady sounds a lot like Joan Crawford, I thought in the first five seconds. You doofus, she is Crawford! And this is how I learn that she was in The Unknown. I saw her onscreen way before I saw her in Mildred Pierce. Fuck my stupid baka brain.

See, the thing that I could not take from this movie, which sadly made it more painful than funny, was that her character (B-I-N-G-O, and Bingo was her name-o) was supposed to be naive, but came across childish. And it wasn't Crawford's fault (this was her first talkie, she still sounds a bit Southern even), but the writing's. And it's not even in a teenager way, she acts like she's five years old.

And then pulls a 180 and she acts like she's ten when we get to the high-society bit.

I did guffaw at the improvised boxing match, and how willing Bingo was to punch people she didn't like.

The Artist

From an early talkie, to a late silent (really late, 2011).

I had to rewrire my brain for this one. It's not supposed to emulate a silent film, but to be a modern silent. It's not supposed to be historically accurate, but to be like Singin' in the Rain, grabbing the myth and twisting it to tell its story.

Because it was filmed on digital, and the camera acts very modern, and the acting is still very modern talkie.

Afterwards, I was on board. At the end of the day, it's a celebration, of the silents, of the talkies (musicals), of melodrama. And I had a blast.

It's weird, because it won so many awards and it didn't create this wave of modern silent movies. Like La La Land didn't create a wave of musicals. Sigh.

And it has a top tier dog. Such a good boy. Deserves all the pats.

comments
