As the school bell rang, the Coal Hill School students hastily packed their bags and stormed out of the laboratory and into the corridors in a flurry of noise and movement. A cacophony of voices filled the school as the teenagers talked excitedly about their plans for the weekend ahead. It was almost like a hurricane. Ian noted that he was no longer able to hear the bell anymore, only shouting and laughter.

The science teacher remained seated at his desk, surrounded by test tubes and other scientific equipment, passing the time by marking exercise books. He waited (eagerly, he had to admit) for Barbara to arrive, as she always did on Fridays after the last term.

It had been a little over a year since they first met and, over the course of that time, they had become good friends. Together, they would eat lunch and chat. Occasionally, when Barbara wasn't spending her weekend with her mother and aunt, they would go out to the pictures or have a drink at the local pub at Friday night.

Well, looking into it, Ian now understood why, both fellow teachers and students, would whisper when they saw the two of them together. He couldn't deny that he had a certain fondness - as he decided to call it - for her. He admired her strength and intelligence and her kindness and her laugh and-

Ah, you sound like a lovestruck schoolboy, Ian thought. The teacher shook his head to clear away these thoughts and put his mind back to the exercise papers in front of him. Maybe he should do something about it.

He recalled a nice, striped red tie that had been tucked away in one of his drawers. It was something he hadn't worn for quite some time. Ian reserved it for "dates", and he hadn't been in the mood for any in a while. Perhaps he might make use of it. But that's something for next week. Hopefully nothing would go wrong by then.

Two sharp knocks and the door opened.

"Good evening, Barbara!" he looked up from his papers. "Did the fourth years give you a headache?" he grinned, as his friend entered the laboratory, rolling her eyes, but Ian noticed she was unable to hide the slight smile tugging at her lips.
