He understood it perfectly.

Before André and Juliette were even aware of each other's existence, she was engaged with Offenbach's assistant — that Didier fellow —, until she broke off it all off because he didn't have the time to get married. And before that titbit, she became smitten with André for reasons beyond her comprehension. He couldn't argue with that — he had such an impact on the ladies, after all.

So, Juliette and André — couple. Juliette and Didier — friends. Until...

She wanted to be with Didier again, what with him having a freer schedule, all thanks to his new assistant. Which is fine on his book. But also continue to be with him. Which is also fine. More fun for her.

He understood it perfectly. She only had to explain it to him five times.

There was just one thing he didn't understand. If he and Juliette were a couple, and Didier and Juliette were a couple, then what were he and Didier to each other?

"No idea," Didier said; Juliette had invited him to the château. "Is that a new way of saying good afternoon?"

André thought about it for a second, thought about it as hard as he could. Narrowed eyebrows, mouth drawn into a tight line, one would think smoke would come out of his ears at any moment. No, it was not a new greeting, it was a serious question.

"Do we even need to be anything?" Didier continued.

"You'll be here more often," André answered.

The young man fumbled with the sleeves. "A guest, perhaps? A friend? A new friend?"

It didn't sound quite right, for André had grown fond of him, as a friend, but maybe...

"You're sweet, Didier," and André brushed his hand on Didier's cheek, making him blush. It was a new beginning.
