Juliette could add "Attending a fancy dress ball as an actual guest and not simply being there in spirit (did the Empress's hair)" to her new list of firsts. Immediately after, well, she couldn't say. The rating wasn't high enough for those details to be disclosed.

Where was she?

Yes, the fancy costume ball. Who, or what, would she be dressed as? She didn't want to as any historical royalty character, that was sure. What to do, what to do...

"Have any ideas?" Juliette moaned and pouted, shuffling down the stairs. Her Marquis, whom she still couldn't call by his name, was crouching and eyed the "telephone" with that intense stare of his. She didn't know what it was, he wouldn't tell her, and the thing had been sitting on the corner for weeks.

"What?"

"For the costumes!"

"Later?" He stood and directed his attention to her, pouting. They matched!

"The sooner, the better," she said, punctuating her sentence by putting her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face.

He got closer, gesturing with gusto. "No, it's 'the longer it lasts, the better', little one."

"Now, that's for later," a tap on his chest. "Enough joking, I'm completely out of ideas."

He got a brainwave, "Champagne bottle!"

"Me? Out of the question!"

"You? Never. That would be me. I could make a little hat..."

"And lose your head?"

"Oh, no." Pause. The cogs of his brain whirred. "But, apparently, the Empress seemed to want that for herself."

Juliette squeaked in confusion.

"I think it was the Duchesse of Coigny, that awful woman, who said she went dressed as Marie Antoinette in the last fancy dress ball. I didn't see it. I was too busy with other matters, and couldn't attend."

"Oh yes! I remember, I was so proud my work that day." She missed it; she truly loved working — and singing and dancing with the ladies in waiting. The Marquis's hair was too short to do anything, it frustrated her sometimes.

Back on track, go back on track.

Another tap to his chest, she smiled. "You would make a good jester."

"And lose my head?" He craddled his long hands on hers.

"No. But the others would." She had a brainwave of her own, "And I could be an aquarium!"

He knitted his eyebrows together.

"I think it would go very well with the conservatory. Don't you agree?"

His monocle glinted.
